What is Production Design?

What you see in your favourite film or television show was most likely not found like that. This is the work of the production designer and their team. Every single set, location, colour, pattern, texture, graphic, hand prop, or piece of practical lighting and furniture that you see on screen is carefully designed and selected to enhance the plot, character arc, and overall tone- creating a cohesive visual story.

The director, cinematographer, and production designer work very closely together to decide the overall look and feel of a project. While the director may hold the ultimate vision of the project and the cinematographer chooses how best to light and shoot that project, the production designer designs what appears on the screen- the visual world of the project.

The production designer does this with the help of a large, highly skilled crew– the first of which is the art department. They also work side by side with the set decoration team, property department, locations department, construction and paint teams, and visual effects department to realize each world you see on screen.
