This past weekend the Television Academy presented its two 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies honouring outstanding artistic and technical achievement in television at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which kicked-off the 71st Emmys, awarded many talented artists and craftspeople in categories including reality, variety special, documentary, animated program and short form animation, choreography for variety or reality program, and interactive program.
The Creative Arts Awards on Saturday night, executive produced by Bob Bain, featured presenters from television’s top shows including Will Arnett (BoJack Horseman), Marsha Stephanie Blake (When They See Us), Roy Choi and Jon Favreau (The Chef Show), Terry Crews (America’s Got Talent), Jeff Goldblum (The World According to Jeff Goldblum), Seth Green (Robot Chicken), Diane Guerrero (Orange Is the New Black), Derek Hough (World of Dance), Marie Kondo (Tidying Up With Marie Kondo), Nick Kroll (Big Mouth) and Wanda Sykes (Wanda Sykes: Not Normal).
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night featured presenters from the season’s most popular shows including Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Maude Apatow (Euphoria), Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us), Rob Corddry (The Unicorn), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Lisa Edelstein (The Kominsky Method), Jared Harris (Chernobyl), Neil Patrick Harris (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine (Pen15), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Peter MacNicol (VEEP), Olivia Munn (The Rook), Chris O’Dowd (The State of the Union), Ryan O’Connell (Special), Wendell Pierce (Jack Ryan), Marcus Scribner (black-ish) and the cast reunion of In Living Color including Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Tommy Davidson.
HBO’s Game of Thrones secured 32 nominations, the most for any program in a single season, beating a 25-year standing record set by NYPD Blue. Over its eight season run, the series has received a total of 161 nominations. Game of Thrones was followed by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (20), Chernobyl (19), Saturday Night Live (18), Barry (17), Fosse/Verdon (17) and When They See Us (16).
The Best Production Design category included many new shows nominated such as Escape at Dannemora, Killing Eve, and The Umbrella Academy in the One-Hour Narrative category. In the One-Hour Period production design category, new nominees included Chernobyl, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Fosse/Verdon.
For the first time ever actress, Catherine O’Hara, is nominated for her role on Schitt’s Creek, will walk the red carpet with her husband Bo Welch who is also nominated for an Emmy this year as the production designer of A Series of Unfortunate Events. We wish them both luck.
FXX will broadcast the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8:00 PM ET/PT. The 71st 2019 Emmy Awards nominations were previously announced on July 16, 2019 by the Television Academy, presenting the widest array of first time nominees since 2011.
The 71st 2019 Emmy Awards will take place at the same location on Sunday, Sept. 22 and they will air live on Fox at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
