The European Film Academy and EFA Productions announced their first winners who will be honoured at this year’s European Film Awards. The rest of the awards will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin in December. Below you will find more information about the winner of Best Production Design, Pain and Glory, directed by Pedro Almodóvar based on his own life as a director including some of his own furnishings and artwork in the sets.
“With his art, the production designer leads us into the subtext, be it the troubled interior of the main character or the dream-like memoirs of his childhood.”
A special eight-member jury convened in Berlin and, based on the EFA Feature Film Selection, decided on the winners in the categories of production design, cinematography, editing, costume design, hair & make-up, original score, sound and visual effects. The members of the jury were:
Nadia Ben Rachid, Editor, France
Vanja Černjul, Cinematographer, Croatia
Annette Focks, Composer, Germany
Gerda Koekoek, Hair & Make-up Artist, Netherlands
Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh, Costume Designer, Ireland
Artur Pinheiro, Production Designer, Portugal
Gisle Tveito, Sound Designer, Norway
István Vajda, Visual Effects, Hungary
After selecting Pain and Glory, production designed by Antxon Gómez, the jury had this to say,”With great audacity, Antxon Gómez constructs the universe of Almodóvar’s characters, as reflected in his choices of colour and design styles. Eclectic and bold but always well balanced. With his art, the production designer leads us into the subtext, be it the troubled interior of the main character or the dream-like memoirs of his childhood.”

Have you seen Pain and Glory yet? Definitely try to see it in a cinema if you can. I saw it at TIFF this year and I really felt like you might miss so many design details or the psychedelic effect of the transitional motion graphics if you were watching on a small screen. Either way, I highly recommend watching this film even if only to view the stunning sets. I’d love to know what you think of the film in the comments below.
