This year, Orange County’s Saddleback College invited guest speaker Production Designer John Janavs, to speak about the art of reality television production design to a group of students. They were kind enough to post it online for all to see. Reality show production design is much more fascinating than I thought it would be.
John Janavs speaks eloquently about how he entered the field of production design, what he looks for when designing a set, how he chooses materials underlying budget limitations, and much more.
This is the single most informative and insightful set of videos I’ve seen all year concerning production design so I suggest you watch carefully and take notes.

Which tip helped you the most? Do you have a better understanding of reality television production design now?

omg these videos may just as well have saved my ass. Just got employed by a major tv channel as a fresh design graduate & thrown in the deep end into reality tv set design – felt I was that close to drowning in it. Thx for posting them up!
