The Enigmatic Work of Street Photographer Vivian Maier

The last few months the works of Vivian Maier have been circulating over social media networks. I only discovered her work a few weeks ago and since then it has haunted me… in a good way.

Vivian Maier was an American amateur street photographer who grew up in France, and after returning to the U.S., worked for approximately forty years as a nanny in Chicago. During those years she took about 100,000 photographs, primarily of people and cityscapes most often in Chicago, although she traveled worldwide, taking pictures in each location. Her photographs remained unknown and mostly undeveloped until they were bought at auction by John Maloof in 2007. Following Maier’s death her work began to receive critical acclaim due to John’s efforts to get her unforgettable work out to the public. (Source: Wikipedia)

Inspiration comes in many forms. Art Direction requires close attention to detail, light, and composition. Vivian had this in spades and I think there is still much to be learned through her work. I hope she gains the worldwide respect she deserves and if not I know her work will stay with me for years to come.
