Tonight is the season finale of one of my new favourite shows, Boardwalk Empire. The show is a period drama focusing on Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s. Nucky interacts with several historical figures in both his personal and political life, including mobsters, politicians, government agents, and the common folk who look up to him. The federal government also takes an interest in bootlegging and other illegal activities in the area, sending agents to investigate possible mob connections but also looking at Nucky’s expensive and lavish lifestyle for a county political figure.

Boardwalk Empire premiered on September 19th this year. The first episode is a work of pure genius directed by Martin Scorsese. If you only see one more episode of television this year that is definitely one to behold. As beautiful as any film. While the rest of the episodes don’t compare to the first, the story, acting, and production design are still superb. They have built up this season to really blow the lid off the next couple seasons given they don’t cancel the show before then. :/
A lot of people have compared it to Mad Men because it’s a well done period piece but the two shows are remarkably different but perfect in their own ways. I love both shows equally but differently. :)
I tried to get into this series, fascinated by the look of it, but somehow it didn’t grab me. I’ll try again. Love the time lapse video of the set building.
I meant to watch this show but somehow it slipped through the cracks. I think it’s high time I pick it up since there doesn’t seem to be much to watch on the tele these days (as you know, I watch The Bachelor for social experiment/group dynamics education and research).
Boardwalk Empire appears to be a beautiful show with substance = awesome and hard to come by these days!
