Art Departmental’s Best Production Design of the Decade: 2010-2019

It’s a brand new year and a brand new decade. With that in mind, here is our list of the Best Production Design of the Decade from 2010 to 2019.

It’s a brand new year and a brand new decade so I thought it was time we take a fond look back at the last decade. Here is our list of the Best Production Design of the Decade from 2010 to 2019.

These lists are always hard to do because film is such a subjective medium and most can not be compared to each other with each being a unique work of art but I tried my best nonetheless. I also found we currently lack the benefit of time passed with recent films to properly judge their impact, but after mulling through 311 films on my initial list I was able to cut it down to these top 25 movies with extraordinary production design released between 2010 and 2019.

Many of these films moved the production design needle, inspired the public, and created cultural conversation.

I felt it was important while creating this list to reevaluate films I didn’t initially love and films that didn’t suit my personal taste when they were first released. By going back, I found that some films moved the production design needle forward, changed the types of films getting greenlit, inspired the public, and in some cases, created a cultural conversation in a way that I could not ignore. Ultimately this list was created with storytelling and artistry meeting historical impact in mind whereas my annual year end lists are much more about my initial feelings on storytelling and artistry meeting technical achievement within a budget.

It should also be noted that I decided all 25 films would have to be completed by a different production designer. This means some films which I did love with all my heart didn’t quite make the cut. For instance, I chose not to include High-Rise, Stoker, or Doctor Strange because I was already highlighting films by the same production designers. There are many more films and production designers I would have loved to include, but 25 was about as much as I felt I could comfortably fit in this post.

Please take the order of these films with a certain grain of salt. All of these films are worthy of every adulation despite the order I chose to put them in. Please be aware that some photos below may contain spoilers. I hope you find new films on this list to see for the first time or rediscover in the years ahead.
